Letter of Understanding re becoming a Laptop Pioneer at The Children's Storefront
Directions: please highlight this text, then choose COPY and now paste into a NEW email message to me ... Steve
Please put your initials in each set of parentheses ( ) or put NA if not applicable
- ( ) Yes I would like to be a Laptop Pioneer and receive one of the new Mac/PC cross platform laptops.
- ( ) I understand that the program will involve approximately 10 hours of training over this coming academic year.
- ( ) If I am a classroom teacher, I will be asked to use a projector and smartboard in the classroom on an occasional basis and
model the usage of integrating technology in the classroom.
- ( ) If my job at The Children's Storefront is not involved in classroom teaching, then I will make an effort to use the laptop and
a projector at occasional faculty meetings, division meetings, administrative meetings, etc
- ( ) I understand that I will be asked to take ownership of one Web page on our Web site and will of course be given training and lessons in how that works.
- ( ) I understand that when I am at school, the laptop must either be in my possession or it must be
be locked with a security cable. I understand that keeping it in a locked office is not adequate. But of course, I can take the laptop home
whenever
desired and once at home, it is not necessary to be locked with a security cable.
- ( ) I understand that I will be asked to write a note to Pioneer Diaries on occasion
describing the journey with a description of how things have been going and what I am planning.
- ( ) I understand that if I am not selected in August 2008, there will be another opportunity in Spring 2009 or Fall of 2009.
- ( ) I understand that in the second year of our Pioneer Program (08-09) each Pioneer with a smartboard in her/his classroom
will be asked to be part of our One-On-One Smartboard Mentoring Program.
- ( ) I understand that since we are a "one person computer department" it is helpful for as many colleagues as possible to learn to help each other with tech problems so that
we have a community of faculty and staff that "lean on each other" and "let others lean on them" ... this way we have a computer department of 40 instead of 1 ;-)
- ( ) I understand that this pioneer agreement is on a one year renewal basis and the fact that I have a pioneer laptop one year does not mean that I automatically have it the next year. I also understand that if and when I leave Storefront, the computer is to be returned to the school along with security lock, security cable, chargers, laptop bag etc
Please add any text or explanation about how the usage of a laptop may prove to be helpful to our students at
The Children's Storefront.

First Required Pioneer Note (several weeks after launch)
good morning to the 14 Pioneers who met on 11/7 when we launched
... it has been about a month and is time to write your first Pioneer note ... please send to Pioneer Diaries (ML) and understand that I will be compiling the notes and sharing as part of a Web page ... questions below are intended to provide you with some things to respond to ... you do NOT have to answer all questions and can use any format you like, even pretending you are writing in a covered wagon that is heading to Oregon ;-)
( ) I understand that I will be asked to write a note to Pioneer Diaries (ML) at least once a month describing the journey with a description of how things have been going and what I am planning
- where do you keep your pioneer laptop (home or at school)? do you ever bring it back and forth?
- do you have a combo lock if used at school?
- have you used a projector yet in the classroom? if yes, what did you think of the experience? do you know that I can easily set you up with a projector in the classroom and if time allows "be your techie" while you teach the kids
- we now have several extra projectors so that you can have one permanently if desired and if you will commit to using it at least 2 or 3 times per week
- what have you used your pioneer laptop for so far?
- can you access the Web from home? legally or by tapping into a neighbor's wireless?
- do you want to be on the mailing list called Pioneer Diaries (ML)? if yes, you will get a lot more mail .. if not, I will compile once a month
- have you started serious work on your Web page? do you want to catch 30 minutes one on one to help review and get you going on this? if so, please sign up on my door? it would be a great pleasure to meet with you for 30 minutes on ANY topic you want!
- do you use First Class regularly now? do you like it?
- what is your reaction to having a pioneer laptop for the first month?
topics we covered briefly in our first two hour session back in Nov or Dec:
Best practices regarding safety: security lock, not walking with laptop open, electric plug and charging, using a laptop case and not a personal backpack with other stuff, Admin account and password for installing software, How to swap the battery
